Castel Sismondo
|
A place of interest in Rimini is surely the Castel Sismondo, built for Sigismondo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, between 1437 and 1446.
Sigismondo, before starting the works, decided to demolish a wide zone of the city: the structure was built over the old houses of the family Malatesta and dismantling a part of the walls of the city.
What we can see today is only the central part of the castle (in which the prince lived) as in 1826 the external walls were demolished and the ditch was covered.
Although its nearly external position to the city, the Castle has not defensive towers towards the outside; the only ones are towards the city. This can indicate as the city rebellions to the gentleman were not rare and that the Malatesta wanted to frighten the citizens, imposing to the inhabitants the sight of his castle.
Today, in the castle are accommodated art exhibitions and cultural events.
